Read the Label: Toxic Chemicals in Your Cosmetics That You Should Avoid

We all know it’s true – many of the ingredients used in beauty products are not that pretty, compare to natural organic cosmetics. As a matter of fact, research has shown that 1 in 8 of the over 80,000 components of personal care and beauty products are industrial chemicals – pesticides, carcinogens, hormone disruptors, and reproductive toxins. Can you just imagine what these ingredients can do to your skin? To avoid suffering the effects of such harmful chemicals on your skin and health, you should turn to natural organic cosmetics.

The next time you shop for shampoos, soaps, moisturizers, and all other types of personal care products, make sure you check the label and avoid the ones with any of these ingredients:

Triclosan: Used in antibacterial cosmetics, such as cleansers, toothpaste and antiperspirants. It is considered as an endocrine disrupter and is likely to contribute to antibiotic resistance in bacteria.

Sodium laureth sulfate: Commonly used in foaming cosmetics, including bubble baths, shampoos, and cleansers. This chemical can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, and may cause cancer.

Siloxanes: This is used in many types of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten skin. It is also a suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant. Studies proved that this is harmful to fish and other wildlife.

Petrolatum: Commonly used in some hair products as a moisture barrier and to keep the hair shiny, this chemical is also found in some lip balms, lipstick and moisturizers. According to research, a petroleum product that is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons may cause cancer.

Parfum: This is any mixture of ingredients for the fragrance that is used in different types of cosmetics. Some of these ingredients can trigger allergies and asthma. There are also some of these that are linked to cancer and neurotoxicity.

Parabens: This chemical is widely used in different cosmetics as preservatives. They are also considered as endocrine disrupters and can have negative effects on male reproductive functions.

Dibutyl phthalate: This ingredient serves as a plasticizer in most nail care products. This is another suspected endocrine disrupter. It is also said to be a reproductive toxicant.

BHA and BHT: These ingredients are used mainly in moisturizers and makeup as they serve as preservatives. Again, these are considered as endocrine disruptors and can cause cancer (BHA).
